Emerson Optimizes Refinery Utilities, Saving Thai Oil $1 Million Per Year

Teesside, United Kingdom, January 20, 2003 - Thai Oil, one of Thailand’s most complex oil, petrochemical, and energy-related companies, has realized savings of more than $1 million per year through the implementation of Emerson Process Management’s AMS Suite: Real-Time Optimizer system. The savings are being delivered at the Sriracha Refinery, Thailand where the AMS Optimizer system is installed and performing utilities optimization.

Thai Oil is a shareowner in the 120 Megawatt cogeneration facility that supplies steam and power to the Sriracha Refinery, as well as the local grid. AMS Optimizer allows Thai Oil to determine the most profitable operation across the cogeneration facility, and to optimize distribution of load and supply under current operating constraints. All project objectives have been met including:

  • Reducing overall energy consumption.
  • Obtaining the most cost-effective method of meeting the site's power and steam demands.
  • Developing tool to evaluate potential benefits from further control and process improvements.
  • Allowing users to create and consider "what-if" scenarios.

“Selecting Emerson’s optimization technology has proven to be of great importance to us and is instrumental in saving us around $1 million each year.” said Ampon Singsakda, technical coordinator of this project for Thai Oil. “We are delighted that Emerson have provided a system that fulfils our requirement to predict optimum operating conditions for the overall utility plant operations”.

“Thaioil is achieving exactly the kinds of bottom-line results that Emerson’s services and technologies are designed to deliver,” said Craig Llewellyn, president of the Asset Optimization division of Emerson Process Management. “Utilities optimization is a challenge facing every process plant around the world, and the results at Thai Oil exemplify the savings to be realized.”

Emerson’s Asset Optimization offering combines services and technologies to improve availability and performance of production assets. It takes advantage of the PlantWeb® digital plant architecture to automate the flow of information on asset reliability and performance to the people who run the business.
