Amerada Hess implements Emerson's AMS Suite: Equipment Performance Monitor Web-based Solution

Company can now manage assets to maximize production from remote locations on and offshore

Teesside, United Kingdom, October 01, 2001 - Emerson Process Management's web-based equipment performance monitoring solution, AMS Suite: Equipment Performance Monitor has been selected by Amerada Hess to provide remote monitoring of critical process equipment for its Triton Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) operations in the Central North Sea Field, U.K.

The Triton FPSO is critical to Amerada Hess for upstream petroleum that forms part of the Bittern & Guillemot West field's subsea infrastructure. AMS Performance Monitor will monitor centrifugal compressors and seawater injection pumps that are crucial to maintaining a constant stream of exporting gas via the Fulmar Gas Line to St. Fergus, near Aberdeen and Water Injection to the reservoir. AMS Performance Monitor will pinpoint any degradation of performance, enabling preventative action to take place, thus assisting in optimizing the field's planned production profile.

This contract forms part of an alliance with Wood Group Engineering who have overall extensive support services responsibility (including maintenance management) for the Triton FPSO and Sulzer Wood who are responsible for maintenance of the equipment monitored by AMS Performance Monitor.

"We need to maximize production from the fields, and that calls for us to know how the equipment is performing within the critical processes," commented David Stewart, Triton Support Services Manager for Wood Group Engineering. "We see AMS Performance Monitor as a means of gathering the pertinent information via the worldwide web and working with on-site operators and engineers to manage the equipment performance."

AMS Performance Monitor will allow Amerada Hess, Wood Group Engineering and Sulzer Wood personnel to browse their equipment operational data and performance monitoring results from remote locations on and offshore within a secure web environment. This will allow operators to assess the effect of plant equipment performance in terms of throughput, downtime and stability, and can assist operators to troubleshoot plant equipment problems remotely.

"We are pleased that Amerada Hess has joined the many operators in the North Sea that are realizing the significant benefits available from AMS Performance Monitor," said Dave Smith, Sales Director of the Performance Monitoring and Optimization business unit of Emerson Process Management. "This contract award provides another example of how our proven technology is delivering valuable equipment performance monitoring through the Internet. In our experience to date, maintenance strategies have been greatly improved with significant cost savings and increased production figures, including examples of over US$1 million per year by reducing equipment downtime and US$3 million per year through increasing production due to improved equipment efficiency".

AMS Performance Monitor is a key element of the Asset Optimization offering of Emerson Process Management, which combines world-class services with innovative products to significantly improve process plant reliability. The results include improved process availability, increased productivity, and reduced equipment cost-of-ownership.

Designed specifically for personnel involved with maintenance, reliability or rotating equipment, AMS Performance Monitor supports all major process plant equipment including compressors, gas and steam turbines, heat exchangers, boilers, furnaces and pumps.

Process data is automatically collected and submitted daily to Emerson Process Management. This data is then validated for consistency and accuracy, and then compared against a pre-defined design model allowing the calculation of performance parameters, such as efficiency, equipment deviation vs. original design conditions, and the actual cost of performance deviation. This precise cost, measures how the equipment is degrading from its original operating ('as new') conditions.
